Barton-Under-Needwood is an attractive village, ideally situated near to the A38. Despite new development it has retained its character with new estates being built off the main streets. There are a number of large Victorian mansions. Georgian and Regency houses also remain. The Parish Church of St James is a building of national importance and whose story is inexorably linked with that of John Taylor, the villages most famous native. Another important native was Thomas Russell. In his will dated 1593 he left money for a school - completed in 1595, and replaced in 1885 by the present infant school.
